The Anti-Smoke Belching Unit (ASBU) of the DENR-Environmental Management Bureau – Region I (EMB-I) through the initiative of the Provincial Government of La Union headed by Governor Francisco Emmanuel Ortega, III and in partnership with the Land Transportation Office (LTO) – Region 1 conducted a roadside anti-smoke belching operation and apprehension on June 18, 2021 in Barangay Ili Sur, San Juan, La Union.
The EMB-I Anti-smoke Belching Team led by EMB-I Regional Director, Engr. Maria Dorcia Naz-Hipe, with the LTO Region 1 Enforcers assisted the Province of La Union – Environment and Natural Resources Office headed by EnP. Annalyn Rosario-Valdez in the random inspection and emission testing of sixty-six (66) vehicles in Barangay Ili Sur, San Juan, La Union. Three (3) gas-fueled and six (6) diesel-fueled vehicles failed the emission test. Drivers of vehicles which failed the emission standards were apprehended by LTO-I enforcers and issued violation tickets. On the other hand, EMB-I technical personnel recommended to the driver/owner that the said apprehended vehicle undergo check-up and regular maintenance. The Provincial ENRO and EMB-I also distributed flyers on air quality management to strengthen the anti-smoke belching campaign.
The DENR-EMB-I ASBU Team utilizes a gas analyzer for gasoline-fueled vehicles and opacimeter for diesel-fueled vehicles during regular anti-smoke belching drives. Both equipment measure the level of Carbon Monoxide and Hydrocarbons for spark ignition vehicles and smoke opacity for compression ignition engine vehicles.
EMB-I’s anti-smoke belching campaign aims to reduce the Total Suspended Particulates (TSP) concentration in Region I, promote public awareness about air pollution, inculcate environmental awareness and culture of voluntary compliance with environmental regulations among motorists, and reduce pollution from mobile sources by up to 20%.
