The Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) – Region I of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) held a virtual Zumba fitness activity dubbed ZumKalikasan 2.0: Hataw para sa Kalikasan on June 25, 2020 which was streamed live on the EMB Region I Facebook Page.
Now on its second year, “ZumKalikasan” aims to raise public awareness about the imperative need to protect and conserve the environment as well as to promote a healthy lifestyle through regular exercise, especially during this COVID-19 pandemic.
EMB Region I Director Engr. Maria Dorica Naz-Hipe said the ZumKalikasan 2.0 is the culminating activity of the DENR-EMB Region I in line with the celebration of the World Environment Day (June 5) and Philippine Environment Month. “In this global pandemic and community quarantine, mass gatherings have been discouraged. Yet, for us to protect and sustain our nature, we must take care of our health and protect ourselves and well-being. Aside from strictly following the minimum health protocols such as wearing of face mask, frequent disinfecting and washing of hands and of course physical distancing, we still have to bear in mind that we have to keep our bodies healthy. Para mapangalagaan ang ating kalikasan, dapat tayo mismo ay nasa mabuting kalagayan.” added RD Hipe.
A short video on the declaration of June 5 as World Environment Day and proclamation of June as the Philippine Environment Month was also shown as part of the awareness campaign of EMB – Region I. Various government agencies, organizations and online viewers joined the ZumKalikasan online event. Prizes such as ZumKalikasan singlets and face masks were given to the online raffle winners and those who shared the ZumKalikasan Facebook Live event.
The live event was held at the rooftop of the DENR Region 1 Building, Government Center, Barangay Sevilla, City of San Fernando, La Union. There were about 70 live participants in various areas at the rooftop and throughout the building to ensure physical distancing. The participants also wore washable face masks as additional protection from COVID-19. The ZumKalikasan 2.0 Facebook Live video on the EMB Region I Facebook page has already garnered over 8,000 views and may still be viewed by the public.
The World Environment Day is celebrated every June 5th and is the United Nation’s principal vehicle for encouraging awareness and action for the protection of the environment. The month of June was declared as the Philippine Environment Month by virtue of Presidential Proclamation No. 237 signed in 1998 by then President Corazon C. Aquino.
