The DENR-Environmental Management Bureau – Region I (EMB-I) through the Environmental Education and Information Unit (EEIU) in partnership with the 1590 Energy Corporation, Bauang, La Union conducted an online information, education and communication activity on solid waste management and climate change on August 20, 2021 via the online platform Google Meet. It was virtually attended by Barangay Officials of Santiago and Payocpoc Sur, teachers and Parent Teacher Association (PTA) members from Santiago Elementary School and Payocpoc Elementary School in Bauang, La Union.
Information Officer II Alberto Sotelo discussed the salient features of Republic Act 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000 and how to properly manage the different types of solid waste. He stressed the importance of composting biodegradable waste to significantly reduce the amount of trash going to the landfills. EEIU Chief Maynard Cara discussed climate change, its natural and man-made causes, its harmful impacts to people and the environment, mitigation strategies and climate change adaptation. He shared with the participants how to reduce their carbon footprint (greenhouse gas emissions that a person produces) to help fight climate change.
1590 Energy Corporation General Manager, Engr. Alberto Badillo, expressed his gratitude to EMB-Region I for supporting them in their environmental activity. Community Relations Officer Genevive Ganaden distributed assorted seedlings to the barangay officials of Santiago and Payocpoc Sur in support to the DENR’s greening program.
