DENR-Environmental Management Bureau – Region I Environmental Monitoring Officer (EnMO), Engr. Arnel R. Josue, of the Ecological Solid Waste Management Section conducted an Information, Education and Communication (IEC) campaign on Republic Act 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000 and participated in the river clean up on April 22, 2022 in Burgos, Ilocos Norte.
The IEC campaign and river clean–up were conducted in celebration of this year’s Philippine Earth Day with the theme “Invest in Our Planet.” The activity aims to strictly implement solid waste management concepts like segregation of waste, collection and proper disposal; to increase awareness of the participants on proper disposal of waste; to discuss the limitation, prohibition and appropriate penalties on various Environmental Laws; and to protect and preserve the ecosystem. It was attended by barangay officials, Barangay Health Workers, 4Ps members, and other stakeholders.
Engr. Josue discussed the salient features of R.A. 9003, classification of wastes, negative impacts of improper solid waste disposal, the prohibited acts and corresponding fines and penalties.
Engr. Josue was hired under the EMB Solid Waste Enforcement and Education Program (SWEEP) which ensures that all DENR Field Offices have Solid Waste Management Focal personnel who shall monitor compliance of LGUs with R.A. 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000 and provide technical assistance and conduct IEC activities on R.A. 9003.
