The Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) โ€“ Region I through Environmental Monitoring Officer (EnMO) Charlene Sue B. Magaliao conducted an Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) campaign on Ecological Solid Waste Management at Talogtog Elementary School, Talogtog, Candon City, Ilocos Sur on April 12, 2022 in celebration of Earth Month and to promote youth involvement in DENRโ€™s โ€œTayo Ang Kalikasanโ€ campaign.

EnMO Magaliao, DENR CENRO-Tagudin, Forest Technician II & Information Officer, Sandy Baguitan and School Head Febe Tallo led the said environmental activity and it was actively participated by 25 participants comprised of elementary pupils, teachers, Barangay Officials and Parent Teachers Association (PTA) officials.

EnMO Magaliao discussed the salient features of Republic Act 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000, types of wastes, and the effects of improper disposal of waste. After the discussion, pupils were asked to identify the different types of wastes and their proper disposal. Composting was also discussed to the barangay officials, parents, and teachers. The IEC campaign ended with planting of seedlings by the pupils and distribution of IEC materials on solid waste management to all the participants.

EnMO Magaliao was hired under the EMB Solid Waste Enforcement and Education Program (SWEEP) which ensures that all DENR Field Offices have Solid Waste Management Focal personnel who shall monitor compliance of LGUs with RA 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000 and also provide technical assistance and conduct IEC activities on RA 9003.
