The DENR-Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) – Region I through Environmental Monitoring Officer (EnMO) Jollie Joy G. Orfiano in partnership with the City Government of Vigan conducted an Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) campaign on Ecological Solid Waste Management for barangay officials on May 13, 2022 in Vigan City, Ilocos Sur.
EnMO Orfiano discussed the salient features of Republic Act 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management of 2000, best practices on ecological solid waste management, solid waste management facilities, and waste reduction strategies. She also underlined the significant roles of the citizens and the Barangay Council in properly managing solid waste. She encouraged them to sustain what they have started in their community and challenged them to adopt eco-friendly and sustainable practices on solid waste management.
A total of 60 barangay officials of Vigan City actively participated in the said activity. EnMO Orfiano distributed flyers and brochures on solid waste management to the participants after her lecture.
EnMO Orfiano was hired under the EMB Solid Waste Enforcement and Education Program (SWEEP) which ensures that all DENR Field Offices have Solid Waste Management Focal personnel who shall monitor compliance of LGUs with RA 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000 and also provide technical assistance and conduct IEC activities on the said environmental law.
